Turkmenistan is represented at the 56th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development


Turkmenistan, represented by the head of the Population Statistics Department of the State Statistics Committee of the country, Jahan Pigamova, participates in the 56th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development, according to the website of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN.
The session began its work on April 10, 2023 at the UN headquarters in New York and will last until April 14.
Within the framework of the general debate, Turkmenistan presented the country's achievements in the field of population and took a number of initiatives to strengthen multilateral cooperation in this area both at the regional and global levels.
In particular, the joint work of the Government of Turkmenistan and UN agencies on the successful conduct of a continuous census of the population and housing stock of Turkmenistan in December 2022 was noted. Its results will be used in the formation of the socio-economic policy of the state.
The agenda of the 56th meeting of the UN Commission on Population and Development includes topical issues related to the effective implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The session also provides for high-level general debates, ministerial round tables and other meetings, during which a number of issues on population and development will be considered.
The UN Commission on Population and Development was established in 1946 and is a functional body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). She specializes in the review and evaluation of the implementation of the Programme of Action (ICPD), which was adopted in 1994 in Cairo.
In 2019, Turkmenistan was elected a member of the UN Commission on Population and Development for the period 2020-2024.
