Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan's Neighboring Countries Discuss Regional Approach

A virtual meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan's neighboring countries was convened by Pakistan on Wednesday.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Mahmoud Qureshi invited colleagues from China, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to talk about a regional approach to the situation in Afghanistan, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry website reported.
Afghanistan's neighbors have a vital stake in the country's stability. A peaceful, stable, united, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan will promote transit trade, cooperation and security in the region.
The meeting is being held the day after the Taliban announced the creation of an interim government in Afghanistan.
The Pakistani Foreign Minister, in his welcoming speech, noted that “the prospect of a protracted conflict and civil war appears to have been averted. The exodus of refugees, which was so feared, did not happen, at least until now. "
However, reputedly, the situation remains complex and volatile. Qureshi recalled his recent trip to the region, during which he visited Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
He proposed to make “this important platform for neighboring countries into a regular consultative mechanism”, as well as to consider the possibility of inviting Afghanistan in the future to this dialogue, aimed at achieving common goals of ensuring lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, leading German and American diplomats are meeting in Germany on Wednesday. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken are going to meet at the American Ramstein airbase for talks on Afghanistan, The Associated Press reports.
The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two foreign ministers will first talk on a bilateral basis and then hold a virtual meeting with other foreign ministers.
