Korea Exchange takes extra time: evening session until 20:00 as a response to growing alternative trading platforms

Financial markets are becoming increasingly global, and time is becoming as important a resource as capital. Investors around the world want to trade when it suits them, and exchanges are forced to adapt to avoid losing volume. Extending trading hours is not just a technical change but a signal that competition for investor attention is reaching a new level.

The Korea Exchange (KRX) on Monday officially launched an after-hours trading session, allowing investors to buy and sell eligible stocks until 20:00 after the main market closes. Core trading hours remain unchanged — from 9:00 to 15:30. Under the new regime, investors can continue trading eligible stocks after the main market closes until 20:00.

Initially, the Korea Exchange planned to launch a pre-market session simultaneously with the after-hours service on the same day, but postponed the plan until the end of 2027 following feedback from the securities sector about the significant burden on IT system development and staffing. The extension of trading hours aligns with a global trend among major exchanges to increase trading windows, aimed at facilitating foreign investors' access to Republic of Korea stocks and enhancing the global competitiveness of the South Korean capital market.

Increasing competition from domestic alternative trading platforms also contributed to this step. Launched in March 2025, NEXTRADE, the first alternative trading system in the Republic of Korea, ended the Korea Exchange's nearly 70-year monopoly on the stock market. By increasing trading hours and lowering transaction fees, the platform quickly lured some trading orders away from the main exchange.

"Especially during the pre-market session [NEXTRADE] from 8:00 to 9:00, trading volume showed a clear upward trend. KRX recognised this market shift and understands that there is real demand. Without extending trading hours, its competitiveness could suffer. This is also an important reason for the policy adjustment," said Hwang Seiwoon, a researcher at the Korea Capital Market Institute.

For retail investors in the Republic of Korea, the extended schedule allows office workers who cannot trade during the day to buy and sell stocks after work. Price reactions to overseas market movements and important corporate news are also expected to be reflected more promptly in stock valuations.

However, concerns have arisen, particularly regarding liquidity and price volatility. Analysts warn that with lower trading activity in the evening session, even small order volumes can cause significant price fluctuations. "Since the launch of the alternative trading platform, short-term price volatility has already been observed, especially in pre-market and after-market sessions. In particular, when market fluctuations intensify, it is difficult to rule out the possibility that this is related to unfair trading practices. Therefore, preventive measures against such risks must be taken in advance," said Hwang.

As for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and exchange-traded notes (ETNs), KRX decided to exclude them from the after-market session for now, citing concerns about market volatility. Nevertheless, a round-the-clock trading system remains a medium- and long-term goal for KRX, and the market generally expects the exchange to gradually expand the range of traded products and further increase trading hours in the future.
