Around 1,000 snakes escape from flooded farm in Guangxi – authorities rush to respond

When disaster disrupts the usual order, hidden threats rise to the surface along with water and mud. Typhoon Meisak struck southern China, and its aftermath brought an unexpected challenge: a flooded farm in Guangxi released around a thousand reptiles into the wild. Local residents are alarmed, authorities are swiftly deploying safety measures, and hospitals confirm that antivenom stocks are sufficient to handle any emergency. Nature reminds us of its power, but humanity responds with readiness and organisation.

The incident occurred in Hengzhou, Guangxi, after heavy rains breached a local reservoir dam, causing flooding in the surrounding area. An estimated 800 to 900 snakes escaped from the farm on Monday, although most are believed to be non venomous. Local reports indicate that one villager was bitten and is receiving emergency care, while residents from nearby villages have formed a volunteer snake catching team to help contain the situation. Using fishing nets and other equipment, the team is working to locate and capture the escaped reptiles.

Amid public concern, the head pharmacist of Hengzhou People's Hospital, a specialised snakebite treatment centre, confirmed that essential medical supplies, including antivenom, remain in adequate supply. In particular, cobra antivenom is being stocked as a priority reserve item. "We have four types of antivenom – for pit vipers, five step vipers, multi banded kraits and cobras. Currently, we are mainly focusing on cobra antivenom and have the largest stock of it.

But all four types are part of our regular inventory," said Jiang Xin, chief pharmacist and director of the pharmacy at Hengzhou People's Hospital. Jiang also clarified that there is no shortage, noting that reserves can be quickly replenished from Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, if needed. "Given the situation, we have significantly increased our stocks. Our reserves are sufficient for any emergency that may arise. And if needed, Nanning can replenish our supplies within 24 hours. So at this point, our stocks are more than adequate," said Jiang.

The farm, damaged by the typhoon, specialised in breeding snakes for medical and food purposes. The reservoir dam breach caused flooding on the premises, and the enclosures could not withstand the water pressure. Local authorities have already begun reinforcing dams and restoring infrastructure, while also stepping up patrols in the affected areas.

As CCTV+ reports. The situation remains under control, and authorities assure the public that there is no major threat, though residents are advised to exercise caution and report any snake sightings immediately.
