Ashgabat's diplomatic corps is undergoing a strategic reshuffle. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with the approval of the Government of Turkmenistan, has appointed Ms. Xiaojun Grace Wang (China) as the new UN Resident Coordinator in the country. The diplomat officially assumed her new position on July 1, 2026.

She replaces Dmytro Shlapachenko (Ukraine), who led the mission in Ashgabat since 2021 and has now been appointed head of the UN office in Azerbaijan.

The appointment of Xiaojun Grace Wang reflects the UN's high commitment to the region. The new Resident Coordinator brings 28 years of extensive experience in international development to her portfolio. It is noteworthy that she has a good understanding of the specifics of Turkmenistan from a professional perspective: Ms. Wang has extensive experience working with developing countries that are landlocked.

Before arriving in Ashgabat, she served as Trust Fund Director at the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), where she oversaw global programs to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Previously, at UNDP headquarters, she coordinated global efforts to combat poverty, address gender equality, and address disaster risk management.

An interesting detail about the new UN Head of Mission's biography: before beginning her career at the global organization, Xiaojun Grace Wang worked in international media, academia, and foundations in both Asia and Europe.

Ms. Wang has an excellent academic background: she holds a PhD in education and international development from the University of London, a Master's degree in British Studies from Beijing International Studies University, and a diploma from Stellenbosch University.

The new coordinator's experience in multilateral partnerships and development financing will provide a powerful impetus to joint projects between Turkmenistan and the UN.
