In Turkmenistan, the work of their famous compatriot, test cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, is closely and proudly followed. Therefore, the news from Russia has not escaped our attention: Oleg Kononenko will temporarily head the Yury Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (CTC).
According to a statement from Roscosmos, Oleg Kononenko, who previously served as deputy head of the CTC, will assume his duties as head of the center on November 10, 2025.

Oleg Kononenko is one of Turkmenistan's most famous natives, whose achievements have become a source of national pride. He was born on June 21, 1964, in the city of Chardzhou (now Turkmenabat, Lebap Province). His career path exemplifies outstanding professionalism and dedication: from a rocket and space engineer to multiple crew commanders on the International Space Station (ISS).
A Record-Breaking Man: 1,110 Days in Zero Gravity
Kononenko has etched his name in the history of world cosmonautics thanks to his absolute records:
World Record for Total Time in Space - Over the course of five orbital missions (from 2008 to 2024), Oleg Kononenko logged 1,110 days, 14 hours, 58 minutes, and 37 seconds of flight time, an unrivaled world achievement.
Record for the Longest Flight to the ISS - During his fifth flight (September 2023 - September 2024), he and his Russian colleague Nikolai Chub set a new record, spending 373 days in orbit.
During his missions, Oleg Kononenko performed seven spacewalks, totaling 44 hours and 30 minutes.
Turkmenistan's High Recognition
Turkmenistan highly values the achievements of its outstanding son. Oleg Kononenko's achievements have been recognized with the highest state awards: The Order of the President's Star (2009), Hero of Turkmenistan, and the Altyn Ay (Golden Crescent) medal (2019).
