Today, on October 30, the 43rd session of the General Conference, UNESCO's principal governing body, began in Samarkand. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay attended the opening ceremony. The delegation of Turkmenistan was led by Minister of Culture A. Shamyradov.
More than 5,000 participants from 193 countries, heads of state and government, ministers, scholars, and leaders in the fields of culture, science, and education gathered in the historic land of Uzbekistan to discuss pressing issues of international cooperation based on cultural dialogue and mutual understanding.
This afternoon, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in the opening ceremony of the 43rd session of the General Conference. Among the guests of honor were Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.
On the morning of October 30, during the General Conference, the election of the President of the General Conference took place. Mr. Khondker Muhammad Talha, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bangladesh to France and Permanent Delegate of Bangladesh to UNESCO, was elected.
The General Conference will also include elections for UNESCO's governing bodies and its intergovernmental and international programs.
On October 28, the 14th UNESCO Youth Forum addressed the fight against climate change and its impacts. More than 150 young leaders from approximately 140 countries participated in the forum.
The 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference will continue until November 13.
