To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its first smartphone, Apple is preparing a special edition — iPhone 20 (or iPhone XX), expected to be announced in September 2027. According to insider reports, this upcoming model will mark the most radical design update in the brand’s history. Apple aims to repeat the revolutionary leap achieved with the iPhone X and once again redefine the direction of the entire smartphone industry.
The new iPhone is expected to resemble a seamless glass monolith with no visible notches or bezels. To achieve this, several key innovations are being developed:
• Completely bezel-less body: The screen will smoothly curve along all four edges (four-edge bending technology), creating a full-immersion visual effect. However, the display itself will remain flat, with the illusion of curvature provided by the top protective layer.
• Hidden components: Apple plans to place the Face ID system and front camera under the display. If Face ID under-display technology is ready by 2027, the front camera may still remain in a small cutout.
• Solid-state buttons: Engineers have completed functionality testing of capacitive (solid-state) buttons that will replace traditional mechanical ones. The pressing sensation will be simulated by localized vibration via the Taptic Engine, improving durability and water resistance.
The anniversary iPhone will feature a new Samsung OLED display with COE technology, enabling a thinner screen, higher brightness, and lower power consumption.
Major improvements are also expected in the camera system. According to leaks, a new HDR sensor with a dynamic range of up to 20 exposure stops will be introduced, bringing the smartphone closer to professional cinema camera standards. In addition, the new iPhone will likely feature:
• An A21 chip, built on an enhanced 2-nanometer process;
• An Apple-designed modem, replacing Qualcomm’s solution, offering greater speed and energy efficiency. Insiders also suggest that Apple may skip the iPhone 19 designation to emphasize the importance of the 20-year milestone — similar to how the company jumped from iPhone 8 to iPhone X.
