Google Connects Data Centers To A New Type Of “Clean” Energy

Google has signed a corporate power purchase agreement with the new Broadwing Energy Center, a natural gas power plant currently under construction near Illinois. The 400-megawatt facility will be equipped with a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system capable of reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 90%.

The plant will supply energy to Google’s data centers in the region. A portion of the generated electricity and steam will also be directed to the nearby Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) facility.

The project is being developed by Low Carbon Infrastructure. Commissioning of the power plant and its CCS system is scheduled for early 2030. An ADM carbon storage facility, which stores millions of tons of CO₂ annually, is already operating nearby.

Broadwing Energy Center will become the first commercial natural gas facility in the United States equipped with a fully functional carbon capture and storage system.
