Microsoft launches Skype for Business SE: A new era for local Messaging Systems
05.07.2025 | 15:10 |Microsoft has released Skype for Business Server Subscription Edition (SE) to provide long-term support for companies utilizing on-premises messaging infrastructures. This solution is designed for organizations unable or unwilling to transition to the cloud-based Teams platform.
SE succeeds Skype for Business Server 2015 and 2019, whose support concludes on October 14, 2025. The new version adheres to the Modern Lifecycle Policy, signifying an "evergreen" status contingent on regular updates. No major functional releases are planned moving forward. Microsoft advises administrators to migrate to SE immediately, as the server can be installed over existing 2015 or 2019 versions.
The updated edition is virtually identical to Skype for Business Server 2019, with differences limited to branding, version number, and licensing agreement. After October 14, 2025, SE will become the sole supported branch, and future patches will block older server operations. Microsoft commits to providing regular cumulative updates, an improved installer, and timely security fixes.
The continuation of an on-premises server is driven by the fact that Teams currently does not offer a server-based solution. Thus, Skype for Business Server SE enables Microsoft to continue serving clients who, for various reasons, are refraining from a full migration to the cloud.
