Russian scientists create AI navigator for the blind and visually impaired

Specialists from Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU NETI) have developed an innovative artificial intelligence-powered navigator, significantly simplifying orientation for blind and visually impaired individuals. This domestically developed application operates on Android smartphones, distinguished by its high efficiency and ease of use.

The system is capable of detecting obstacles up to five meters away, processing each frame in just 300 milliseconds. Such speed enables users to react promptly to suddenly appearing impediments, while minimizing cognitive load.

Key advantages of the NSTU NETI development include offline functionality, complete absence of advertisements, and no paid subscriptions. Future plans involve adding a feature for users to independently add objects for identification, as well as expanding the application's capabilities with voice navigation and object search by name. The project is nearing completion; following final trials, the developers will address any identified shortcomings before the official release.
