GM and LG's cobalt-free batteries will provide 640 miles of range by 2028

General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution are achieving a breakthrough in battery technology, joining forces to develop next-generation lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) batteries. These batteries, slated for implementation in GM's electric vehicles, including SUVs and trucks, promise a significant increase in driving range up to 640 km on a single charge. A key advantage of LMR technology is the replacement of costly and ethically concerning cobalt in the cathode with more affordable and abundant manganese. This move will not only reduce the production cost of batteries, which constitute a significant portion of an electric vehicle's price (30-40%), but also make electric cars more accessible to a wider range of consumers.

Mass production of the innovative LMR batteries is scheduled for 2028 in the United States, which will allow GM to outpace competitors, including Ford, in the widespread adoption of this technology. The transition to prismatic battery cell elements instead of cylindrical ones contributes to increased energy density and simplifies the assembly process, directly impacting the increase in driving range. It is anticipated that the new batteries will surpass current high-nickel solutions used in Chevrolet and Cadillac models (480-515 km) in this regard. Production will be undertaken by the joint venture between GM and LG called Ultium Cells. Currently, the company already has 300 LMR cell prototypes and plans to launch pilot lines by the end of 2027. Final testing and refinement of the technology will take place at GM's new development center in Michigan and at LG's facilities. In addition to the technical advantages, an important aspect is the localization of supply chains, which aligns with the United States' desire to reduce dependence on China in the production of key components for electric vehicles.
