RustDesk 1.4.0: a new stage in the development of the open-source project

Yesterday, May 10, 2025, marked the pre-release of version 1.4.0 of the multi-platform open-source project RustDesk, a convenient solution for remote desktop access. Developed as an alternative to TeamViewer, this application is oriented towards users who prefer self-hosting.

The new version, RustDesk 1.4.0, offers ready-made builds for a wide range of operating systems, including desktop Windows, Linux, and macOS, as well as mobile iOS and Android. Furthermore, a functional web client version is available, expanding accessibility options.

For those who prefer complete control, RustDesk provides the ability to deploy their own synchronization server. The server installation process has been maximally simplified and can be carried out using Docker, on Windows via PM2 or NSSM, on Synology DSM 7.2 and DSM 6 network-attached storage, and on Ubuntu Server (both directly and via Docker).

Version 1.4.0 of RustDesk implements the following significant improvements and innovations:

-Support for entering the lock screen password directly on the locked remote screen has been included.

-A convenient function for creating screenshots of the remote desktop has been added.

-In the Pro version of the application, the ability to use the hostname as a device identifier has been introduced.

-Automatic application updates have been implemented in the Windows environment. Manual updates are also available for Windows and macOS users.

-WebSocket support has been ensured across all supported platforms, enhancing connection stability and performance.

-An option to adjust the trackpad speed during remote control has been added.

-The dependency on the reqwest library for working with system proxies has been eliminated.

-The SOCKS5 proxy settings now exclusively use the TCP protocol, resolving UDP configuration issues for many users.

-The "Exit" menu item in the system tray has been renamed to "Stop Service" to prevent misunderstandings.

This pre-release of RustDesk 1.4.0 demonstrates the active development of the project, aimed at increasing ease of use, expanding functionality, and providing users with flexible options for organizing remote access.
