Turkmen gas to Turkey could reshape global energy markets: expert
04.03.2025 | 18:20 |The supply of Turkmen natural gas to Turkey marks a new phase in the economic and strategic relations between the two countries and has the potential to impact the global energy market. This is reported by Türkiye today, citing Dr. Hikmet Eren, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the EkoAvrasya Foundation.
Eren emphasized that the transportation of Turkmen gas to Turkey is a significant milestone for the Turkic world, contributing not only to economic cooperation but also to strengthening regional energy security.
"Securing the supply of Turkmenistan's vast natural gas reserves to Turkey within the framework of a strategic partnership is a crucial step towards strengthening the economic and energy security of the Turkic world" Eren stated.
"This initiative will not only strengthen trade ties between the two countries but could also alter the balance of power in the region," he added.
Speaking about the broader implications of this energy cooperation, Eren noted that this move will significantly bolster Turkey's energy security and its role in gas transit to Europe.
"Turkmenistan possesses some of the world's largest natural gas reserves, and integrating these capacities into Turkey's energy network will strengthen the strategic economic foundation of the entire Turkic world" he said.
"This step is not just a commercial agreement; it could reshape the balance of power in the region" Eren added. He also referred to the statement by Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, who emphasized the importance of transporting Turkmen gas to Europe via Turkey.
"In the first stage, 1.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be supplied using the SWAP method. We see this as just the beginning" Yılmaz said. "In subsequent stages, we expect Turkmen gas and electricity to reach European and global markets through Turkey".
Eren noted that these developments will have an impact not only on the economy but also on geopolitics. "Energy is not just a commodity for trade; it is a key factor in economic growth", he said.
"The supply of Turkmen gas to Turkey will strengthen the economic integration of the Turkic world and impact global energy markets" Eren concluded.
