Mike Johnson re-elected as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
04.01.2025 | 12:30 |House of Representatives Republican Mike Johnson has been re-elected as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in the first round of voting.
He needed the support of at least 218 House members to secure his position. Initially, three Republicans did not back Johnson's re-election. However, Ralph Norman (South Carolina) and Keith Self (Texas) later changed their stance and voted for him.
Republican Thomas Massie from Kentucky declined to support Johnson, instead endorsing Tom Emmer of Minnesota. Former President Donald Trump expressed his support for Johnson, calling him a "good, hardworking man."
"Congratulations to Speaker Mike Johnson for receiving an unprecedented vote of confidence in Congress," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, following the re-election.
