Turkmenistan prepares large-scale solar energy project

Turkmenistan with its large oil and gas reserves is carrying out the large-scale work on the use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind energy.

Currently, research study on the use of solar and wind energy at the territory around the Altyn Asyr artificial lake is running at the Research-and-Production Center at the State Energy Institute (in Mary). In particular, a project has been prepared on installation in out-settlements of 11 power plants with a capacity of 4.3 MW that to be powered by solar energy.

According to experts, the favorable climatic conditions allow the widespread use of environmentally friendly alternative energy sources in Turkmenistan. There is the abundance of solar source – almost 250 sunny days over year, while another feature is wind that typical for some regions of the country. These factors allow predicting that, in time, the solar and wind energy could replace oil and gas resources in the energy balance of Turkmenistan.
