The draft global compact on plastic waste will be prepared by the end of 2024
05.06.2023 | 01:01 |At the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution in Paris, representatives of 175 countries adopted a resolution on the development of a draft international treaty on plastic waste by the end of next year.
This is an important step towards solving one of the most pressing problems of our time. The goal of the negotiators is to reduce the annual global production of plastic.
Rapidly increasing levels of plastic pollution negatively affect various aspects of sustainable development. More than 400 million tons of plastic are produced annually in the world. At this rate, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the volume of plastic produced will triple by 2060.
During the meeting at UNESCO headquarters, experts from the World Wildlife Fund spoke out for the need to sign a global document obliging governments to ban the production of dangerous plastic, encourage recycling it, and rationally dispose of waste.
