An international team of scientists has discovered 5 meteorites in Antarctica, one of which weighs 7.6 kg and is one of the largest meteorites found in the last century, Phys.org reports.

Of about 45,000 meteorites discovered over the last century, only about a hundred have a large size. Maria Valdez, a researcher at the Field Museum of Natural History at the University of Chicago, noted that even tiny micrometeorites are of high value, and it is quite rare to find such a large meteorite.

All 5 meteorites will be thoroughly examined and analyzed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The researchers also took samples of sediments that may contain micrometeorites for analysis.
