Strict compliance with the Paris Agreement will be able to save only 52% of glaciers by 2100, but with the current disregard of the treaty, this figure will be 32%, The Guardian reports, citing a study by scientists.

The Paris Agreement, which assumes following the most optimistic scenario of global warming, aims to keep the increase in average temperature at "just below 2 degrees".

According to the presented study, by the end of the century, the whole of Central Europe, Canada and the USA will almost completely remain without glaciers, which will provoke a significant increase in the level of the World Ocean. In addition, melting will endanger the water supply of about 2 billion people on the planet.

"The rapidly increasing loss of glacier mass as global temperatures rise above 1.5°C underscores the urgency of making more ambitious climate commitments to preserve glaciers in mountainous regions," the researchers note.

Glaciers are one of the key "storages" of fresh water on Earth: thanks to them, agriculture and access to drinking water are possible in many regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In addition, melting with an optimistic forecast can lead to an increase in water by 90 mm, with a negative one — by 115 mm, which endangers residents of large port cities.
