The national round of the Spelling Bee regional competition was held in Turkmenistan for the first time
03.11.2022 | 14:25 |The State Library of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan hosted a round of the Central Asian Spelling Bee contest on the correct reproduction of English words by letters, according to the website of the US Embassy in Turkmenistan.
Organized by the US diplomatic Mission, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, and Culture of Turkmenistan, the event was attended by about 80 talented spelling experts from 18 Turkmen universities.
The winners of the national round of the competition were invited to take part in the Spelling Bee regional competition, which unites English language experts from Central Asia. The regional tour is to take place in the capital of Uzbekistan this year.
Contests for the reproduction of English words by letters are typical for English—speaking countries due to the fact that English has a rather difficult to master and "not intuitive" spelling - the spelling of many words has developed historically and does not correspond to pronunciation. It is believed that such tournaments contribute to improving literacy among schoolchildren, expanding their vocabulary.
