Turkmenistan celebrates Turkmen Carpet Day
30.05.2022 | 05:32 |Day of the Turkmen Carpet has been celebrated annually in Turkmenistan on the last Sunday of May for 30 consecutive years. The main celebrations traditionally take place in Ashgabat.
This year, the venue for the celebration was the exhibition center of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan. Today, a colorful exposition of carpets and rugs, as well as an exhibition-fair dedicated to the development of the textile, trade and carpet industries, has been unfolded here.
Masters of folk arts and crafts - ceramists, jewelers, stained glass and velvet artists, manufacturers of national clothes, bags, accessories, unique dolls and much more - presented their unique handmade works.
But the main "heroes" of the vernissage are, of course, man-made works created by Turkmen carpet weavers. The central place of the exposition was occupied by the best canvases - the winners of the artistic and creative competition of carpets and rugs "Carpet is the national pride of our people".
These are wonderful examples of classic and modern carpets, unsurpassed carpet panels with landscapes and souvenirs. There are also horjun bags, chuvals and sacks, which once served as furniture for storing dishes and other household utensils, and for transporting clothes. All these products are the creations of the hands of skilled craftswomen working at the carpet factories of the State Association "Turkmencarpet".
They, like their predecessors thousands of years ago, create extraordinary handmade masterpieces that delight connoisseurs and lovers of Turkmen carpets all over the world. For centuries, women have passed down the art of carpet making from generation to generation, improving the art and technique of carpet making.
The inclusion of the traditional Turkmen art of carpet weaving in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019 was a recognition of the filigree skills of talented carpet weavers of Turkmenistan in the world cultural space. And in this sense, the Carpet Festival, annually celebrated throughout the country, contributes to the revival and preservation of the national and creative traditions of Turkmen carpet weaving.
Today, Ashgabat hosted a conference of the World Association of Connoisseurs of Turkmen Handmade Carpet Weaving, as well as the awarding ceremony for the best carpet weavers of the "Turkmencarpet". Distinguished masters of carpet-making art were awarded the honorary titles of "Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan".
