 The President of Turkmenistan spoke at the 4th Asia-Pacific Water Summit

Ensuring people's right to access to water and responsibility for it should become the duty of all states, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov said speaking via visual communication at the 4th Asia-Pacific Water Summit, which is being held in the Japanese city of Kumamoto.

This task is of particular importance in the current conditions, when the COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on the stability of the world economy and global food security, the Turkmen leader emphasized.

Speaking at the forum, Berdimuhamedov recalled the initiatives of Turkmenistan to develop the UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin, the creation of the Central Asian Water Strategy, a new Action Program to assist the countries of the Aral Sea Basin, etc.

The President of Turkmenistan stated that the country's position on international water and energy issues is principled and consistent, and these issues should be resolved on the basis of universally recognized norms of international law, taking into account the interests of each country and with the active participation of international organizations.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov also noted the efforts of Turkmenistan in matters of water issues at the national level, in particular, mentioning the project to create an artificial lake "Altyn asyr" in the Karakum desert, which will solve a number of pressing environmental, economic and social issues both in Turkmenistan itself and in the region of Central Asia.
