The UN General Assembly announced the date of the new holiday as the day of the first Global Conference on Sustainable Transport in Ashgabat on November 26, 2016. The resolution was adopted on the proposal of Turkmenistan on May 16, 2023 during the 70th plenary meeting of the 77th session of the General Assembly.
