Xi Jinping stresses need for full and rigorous Party self-governance

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, stressed the need to persevere with full and rigorous Party self-governance to ensure that the CPC remains the strong leadership core in advancing socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Xi made the remarks at a symposium on August 21 to solicit opinions from non-Party personages on drafting a CPC Central Committee resolution on major issues concerning the continued implementation of full and rigorous Party self-governance.
The resolution was adopted at the fifth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, which concluded on Thursday in Beijing.
Addressing the symposium, Xi said that to govern the country well, the Party must first govern itself well, and that strengthening the country requires the Party to strengthen itself first.
Wang Huning, Cai Qi and Li Xi, members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, also attended the symposium.
The chairpersons of the central committees of the eight non-CPC political parties, the chairperson of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and a representative of personages without party affiliation shared their views and suggestions. They expressed full support for the draft resolution.
Xi said the CPC had consistently promoted full and rigorous Party self-governance since its 18th National Congress in 2012, growing stronger through the process of reform and self-improvement.
He added that profound changes in the global and domestic environment, as well as within the Party, had brought new circumstances and challenges to this work. He called for firm confidence, continued resolve and earnest efforts to improve Party governance.
Xi stressed the importance of persistent efforts to address prominent problems within the Party. He identified key tasks as upholding and strengthening the CPC Central Committee's centralized and unified leadership, consistently applying strict principles, improving the system for full and rigorous Party self-governance, and making political development the overarching principle guiding Party building in all areas.
At the symposium, Xi also highlighted the need to uphold, develop and improve China's new type of political party system. He expressed the hope that other political parties, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and personages without party affiliation would remain committed to the original aspiration of multiparty cooperation, firmly uphold the CPC's leadership, actively offer proposals on state affairs and fully perform their role in democratic oversight.
