Electric tricycles have become one of the unexpected highlights of the ongoing 140th China Import and Export Fair, better known as the Canton Fair, in Guangzhou.

The three-wheeled electric vehicles are attracting overseas buyers with their affordability, practicality and ability to be customized for different markets. For Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises, the segment is also opening new opportunities for export growth.

One Guangdong-based company has participated in the Canton Fair for more than 20 consecutive years. This year, it brought not only new models but also technologies specifically adapted to the conditions of different countries and regions.

Over the past few days, the company has received nearly 100 potential buyers from North America and Africa. Company representative Bie Libo said product development increasingly takes specific market characteristics into account while building up technologies for future overseas expansion.

Manufacturers are adjusting body size, power systems, driving range, safety features and exterior design to match different road conditions and use cases around the world.

The vehicles have also attracted interest from buyers in Southeast Asia. A Malaysian visitor attending the Canton Fair for the first time described the products as novel and highlighted the wide variety on display.

The 140th Canton Fair is being held in three phases in Guangzhou from October 15 to November 4.

According to CCTV+, over the past 70 years the Canton Fair has grown into China's largest and longest-running international trade event, while electric tricycles this year illustrate how traditional utility vehicles are being adapted for global markets.
