China releases documentary on fraud crackdown in Myanmar

China has released a three-part documentary on the investigation of telecom scam compounds in northern Myanmar and a deadly shooting in the Kokang region.
The documentary was jointly produced by China's Ministry of Public Security and China Media Group. The first episode aired on CCTV-1 on Monday, with two more scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
After the shooting on October 20, 2023, Chinese and Myanmar police formed a joint investigation team. Chinese investigators were allowed to enter several scam compounds in Kokang, where they collected evidence related to homicide, illegal gambling and telecom fraud.
The investigation took place amid armed clashes. A task force located the bodies of three victims and collected biological samples. The bodies were later brought back to China, where forensic examinations found that all three had died from gunshot wounds.
China launched a special campaign against cross-border telecom and online fraud in northern Myanmar in July 2023. On January 29, death sentences were carried out against 11 gang members convicted of a number of serious crimes.
According to CCTV+, the documentary shows the investigation and law enforcement cooperation between China and Myanmar in combating cross-border fraud networks.
