China's Hade-Fuman oil field, the country's largest desert oil field, has produced more than 26 million tonnes of oil and gas equivalent from reservoirs located deeper than 6,000 meters underground.

The field lies on the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. According to CNPC, it has produced 20.36 million tonnes of crude oil and 8.15 billion cubic meters of natural gas from ultra-deep formations.

Engineers recently retrieved core samples from a depth of 8,080 meters at the Zhentan-1 well. The rocks are estimated to be around 500 million years old, marking the first time a core has been recovered from more than 8,000 meters in the northwestern Tarim Basin.

The samples will help researchers assess the hydrocarbon-generating capacity, reservoir thickness and maturity of ultra-deep oil and gas formations.

A total of 485 ultra-deep wells have been drilled at Hade-Fuman. Of these, 133 have each produced more than 100,000 tonnes of oil and gas, while 464 have each produced more than 10,000 tonnes.

According to CCTV+, Hade-Fuman has become China's largest desert oil field and a major base for ultra-deep hydrocarbon production. Proven oil and gas reserves in the Tarim Basin exceed 5 billion tonnes, with more than half located in ultra-deep formations.
