Skies over Wuhan come alive: world kite stars gather at Mulan Grassland

In Wuhan, central China, Mulan Grassland has once again become the centre of attention, hosting world-class kite-flying competitions. On Saturday, the China-Wuhan International Kite Tournament and the 2026 National Sport Kite Championship kicked off. Ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival and China's National Day, the event brings together sport, culture and tradition in a vibrant celebration.
Today, the sky over Mulan Grassland comes alive with kites: more than 20 international pilots from 12 countries and regions have joined 120 Chinese athletes to take part in the competitions. Teams from around the world are demonstrating synchronised performances with four-line sport kites that spin, dive and slice through the air in perfect rhythm.
"We are a couple known as the 'Kite Pair'. We travel the world attending kite festivals. We are very happy to be here in Wuhan because of its wonderful grass field and excellent organisation. It couldn't be better, and we love China. I have been here many times and love coming back. And I feel at home here. It is a great honour for us to be able to support Chinese kite culture. It is very important," said the members of the duo known as the "Kite Pair".
The event is more than just a sports competition; it combines kite culture, local traditions and the festive spirit of the upcoming Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays. In the coming weeks, visitors can also stroll through flower fields, relax at a campsite and take part in live performances on Mulan Meadows, showcasing Wuhan as a dynamic place for international sport and cultural exchange.
