Turkmenistan owns part of the southern and central Caspian Sea, which has a huge potential of hydrocarbon resources. The Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea is divided into 32 license blocks. The total hydrocarbon resources, according to estimates of foreign experts and local geologists, amount to 18.2 billion tons in oil equivalent, said Serdar Nuryagdyyev, Chief geophysicist of Turkmengeology Group, speaking at the International Forum on Attracting Investments in the Energy Sector of Turkmenistan in Dubai (UAE).
At the end of the 90s of the last century, Turkmen specialists together with the company "WesternAtlas" conducted 2D seismic surveys of 2D with a volume of more than 16 thousand units. km, which made it possible to study the geological structure of the territory to a depth of 7 km and assess its hydrocarbon potential. The project was implemented in three stages: the first - deep-water data, during which 54 profiles were worked out, with a total length of 7571,925 km.; the second - shallow-water data and data of work in the transit zone and on land, 56 profiles were worked out, with a total length of 3509,275 km.km.; the third is deep-water (Phase 1 infill), data for additional exploration of works within the framework of stage 1, 45 profiles were worked out, with a total length of 5288,288 cubic km.

The Turkmen geologist elaborated on the description of promising licensed blocks 16 – with an area of 1810.10 km2 and 24 – with an area of 2565.96 km2, located in the western part of the Turkmen sector of the South Caspian basin. Promising geological structures of Hajar and Turkmenbashi can be traced within these blocks, as evidenced by the paleoecology and lithophilia of the Greater Caspian in the Middle Pliocene, as well as numerous lithological sources, the Turkmen scientist noted.

The well-known neotectonic structures of the South Caspian basin formed the promising structures of Hajar and Turkmenbashi, and folding and tectonic movements in this region created the structure necessary to create a trap and a screen. Anomalies in free air and gravity in the Buge reduction indicate the high prospects of structures in blocks 16 and 24. The forum participants can get more detailed information in the packages of geological and geophysical information on the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea, which is offered by the State Corporation "Turkmengeology", Turkmen geologist Serdar Nuryagdiyev concluded his speech.
