Turkmen school student performs successfully at the Asian stage of the World School Team Chess Championship

From April 6 to 11, the Asian continental stage of the World School Team Chess Championship was held in Almaty. The event was organized by FIDE and the International School Chess Federation. A total of 26 teams from 19 Asian countries participated.

Turkmenistan was represented at the prestigious tournament by the team of the Joint Turkmen-Russian Secondary School named after A.S. Pushkin.

According to the results, Osman Hamrakuliyev secured third place on the first board. The first place in this category went to young International Master Roman Shogdzhiev from Kurchatov School (Moscow, Russia), with a FIDE rating of 2399.

Osman is a 7th-grade student at the Pushkin Turkmen-Russian School and has been playing chess since the age of five. His coach is Grandmaster Maksat Atabayev.

Each team consisted of four main players, one reserve player, and an adult captain. According to the rules, each team had to include at least one boy and one girl. Participants were born between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018.

In addition to the matches, the tournament program included masterclasses by grandmasters and coaches, educational sessions for teachers and parents, interactive activities, and a cultural program.

Turkmenistan’s participation is significant, as introducing chess into school curricula is one of the key strategic goals of the national Chess Federation.
