OpenAI has taken two major steps toward creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). During an internal meeting, CEO Sam Altman announced the completion of the pretraining phase of a new powerful model codenamed Spud. At the same time, the company officially established a division responsible for AGI deployment.

These developments indicate that OpenAI is moving from theoretical research to practical preparation for the emergence of superintelligence. According to Altman, the Spud model will be “very powerful” and capable of “truly accelerating the economy.” The company expects to see initial results from the model within a few weeks. Details about Spud’s architecture remain undisclosed.

The company’s product division is now officially called AGI Deployment. While OpenAI previously emphasized that AGI was a long-term goal, the term has now become part of its formal organizational structure. This comes amid statements by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who claims that the industry has effectively already reached AGI.

To concentrate resources on Spud, the company decided to shut down the Sora video generator app and API. Sam Altman also handed over control of safety teams to other executives so he can focus fully on raising capital and building data centers at an unprecedented scale. According to plans, OpenAI’s spending is expected to reach approximately $115 billion by 2029.
