Scientists from Kyoto University have developed a unique humanoid robot called Buddharoid. Trained on thousands of Buddhist scriptures, the machine is capable of engaging in live dialogue, offering spiritual guidance, and answering complex philosophical questions, effectively replacing clergy in times of personnel shortages.

Japan is facing a serious demographic crisis: an aging population and labor shortages have affected even the religious sphere. The project, led by Professor Seiji Kumagai, aims to compensate for the lack of Buddhist monks through advanced technologies. Unlike earlier prototypes that operated according to rigid scripts, Buddharoid uses advanced language models to communicate fully with temple visitors.

Technically, the device is a commercial humanoid platform integrated with an AI system. The robot not only speaks but also imitates human behavior: it gestures, moves around the temple, and adopts traditional prayer postures. During a recent demonstration at one of Japan’s temples, the faceless figure in a gray monk’s robe interacted freely with visitors, helping them reflect on personal concerns.

The main value of the development lies in its “digital wisdom.” The robot’s database includes not only widely known sutras but also highly specialized texts that are difficult even for experienced scholars to study. This enables the machine to provide accurate and profound responses, linking ancient teachings with modern realities.

In the future, researchers plan to expand Buddharoid’s functions, allowing it to participate fully in religious ceremonies. For many Japanese residents, this format is becoming an accessible way to receive spiritual support in an era of rapid digitalization.
