A project has been launched in Afghanistan that will connect local settlements to Turkmenistan’s power grid. According to Fergana agency, the initiative plans to supply electricity to 21 villages located in the Sang-Atash district of Badghis province.

The total cost of the project amounts to $2 million. Once the technical works are completed, around 7,000 families will gain access to electricity. The connection of all settlements included in the program to Turkmenistan’s energy network is expected to be completed within the next five months.

Technical works on Afghan territory are being carried out by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS). At the end of last year, the company’s head, Abdul Bari Omar, also announced another large-scale initiative being implemented jointly with Turkmen energy specialists. This refers to the TAP (Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan) power transmission line project.

In December, the route map of the project was finalized, and DABS planned to send it to Ashgabat in the near future.

For their part, representatives of the Government of Turkmenistan confirmed their readiness to cooperate with neighboring countries and emphasized that the TAP and TAPI projects are of key importance for energy cooperation and the economic interests of both Ashgabat and Kabul.
