One of the most striking examples of mythical creatures in Turkmens folklore is the dragons depicted on the portal of the Annau Mosque. There are many folk legends connected with these dragons. One of them tells how the inhabitants of the local village saved one dragon-azhdarkha. In gratitude, dragons brought many objects of great value to the local people, and the queen of the village ordered a magnificent mosque to be built for them. In this way, the two dragons were immortalized on the mosque's entranceway. It is believed, that the inhabitants of this village worshiped these creatures.
