Turkmenistan is modernizing its telecommunications infrastructure: by 2028, the number of international fiber-optic lines will increase to eleven. The Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan is implementing a large-scale digital transformation program for the national economy. As part of the State Program for 2026–2028, the construction of new cross-border fiber-optic trunk lines is planned.

The Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan is working in two key areas to develop international connectivity. The first involves the construction of the fiber-optic line “Serhetabat – Herat via Arkadagyň Ak ýoly,” which will create opportunities to increase transit traffic and gain access to the Indian telecommunications market.

The second strategic project is being implemented in cooperation with Azerbaijan. The companies “Turkmentelekom” and “Azertelekom” are laying a submarine fiber-optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. At the same time, the construction of terrestrial trunk lines along the Etrek–Incheburun and Bekdash–Temirbaba routes is underway.

The implementation of these projects will increase the number of international fiber-optic connections from eight to eleven and significantly enhance the capacity of the national data transmission system. Turkmenistan is strengthening its position as a key information and communications bridge between East and West, as well as North and South, in the Central Asian region.
