In January 2026, Google introduced a large-scale update to the Chrome browser that radically changes the way people browse the web. The centerpiece of the update is an AI agent powered by the Gemini 3 model, capable of performing complex tasks directly within the browser window. This marks an important step toward the “agentic internet,” where software does more than display pages—it actively helps users save time.

1. Smart Gemini Sidebar

The Gemini chatbot is now fixed in a sidebar and available on top of any open tab. It can “see” the content of the current page: users can ask it to instantly summarize long articles, compare product prices across multiple tabs, or create a travel plan based on information from purchased tickets.

2. Image Editing with Nano Banana

The browser now includes Nano Banana, a powerful AI image generator. Users no longer need to download images to their devices in order to edit them. Simply drag an image into the sidebar and give a command—for example, change the interior style of a Pinterest photo or generate an infographic based on data from a webpage.

3. Integration with Google Services

Gemini has gained direct access to Gmail, Calendar, and Maps. Within the Chrome interface, the AI can find flights, place orders in online stores, or build optimal routes using information from personal emails and schedules.

4. Auto Browse Autonomous Agent

The most ambitious feature is Auto Browse. This assistant can independently fill out forms, solve CAPTCHAs, manage subscriptions, and even search for housing. The agent can compare products and add them to a shopping cart while staying within a user-defined budget.

Important: Auto Browse features are currently available only to subscribers of paid plans (AI Pro and Ultra) in the United States. For security reasons, any payments or document signing always require final confirmation from the user.

The update has already begun rolling out on macOS, Windows, and Chromebook Plus. Check your browser settings to enable the new AI tools.
