Ecoworld | ORIENT. Tajikistan has officially confirmed hosting the Fourth International High-Level Conference within the framework of the Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development." The global forum will be held in Dushanbe from May 25–28, 2026, and will be a crucial stage in preparation for the major UN Water Conference.

Blue Gold Diplomacy

As the initiator of the UN "Water Decade," Tajikistan is transforming its capital into the planet's main forum for environmental discussions. The 2026 forum will bring together heads of state, ministers, scientists, and representatives of financial institutions.

The main goal is not just discussion, but a demonstration of transformative solutions. In the face of climate change, as the glaciers of the Pamir and Tien Shan mountains recede, the region urgently needs unified mechanisms for managing their shared rivers.

Regional Focus and ESCAP

A special feature of the program will be a meeting under the auspices of ESCAP (the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific). For Central Asian countries, including Turkmenistan, this is a window of opportunity to:

  • — Develop a collective regional position vis-à-vis the global community;
  • — Discuss the implementation of sustainable water infrastructure and hydropower;
  • — Find investment for desalination and digital water metering projects.

Technologies, Tools, and the Future

The 2026 forum program will extend beyond the conference rooms. The delegate agenda includes:

Nine thematic sessions focused on interactive UN dialogues.

An international exhibition showcasing innovations in water reclamation and purification.

Special tours showcasing Tajikistan's experience in hydropower management and preserving the heritage of the Silk Road.

The meeting will conclude with a Declaration that will form the basis of the UN's global agenda for 2028. The Dushanbe venue is once again becoming the center of the region's "water diplomacy," a reminder that in a world where resources are limited, water should not be a source of dispute, but a tool for effective interstate cooperation.
