Last week (22–28 November), key highlights included the strengthening of China’s partnership with Pacific Island nations, the country’s first-ever emergency space launch, and Beijing’s reaffirmation of its stance on the Taiwan issue during a call between Chinese and U.S. leaders. In addition, German automaker Volkswagen opened its largest integrated research facility outside Germany, located in China.

Key developments:

1. Cooperation with Tonga

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with King Tupou VI of Tonga, who completed his first state visit to China in seven years (21–27 November). Xi Jinping called for better alignment of development strategies, reflecting strong cooperation between China and the Pacific Island countries. The King visited Fujian and Shaanxi provinces to gain a deeper understanding of development at the grassroots level.

2. Taiwan stance

During a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on 24 November, Xi Jinping reiterated China’s principled position on the Taiwan issue, emphasizing the need to jointly defend the outcomes of World War II. President Trump, in turn, described relations with China as “extremely strong.”

3. Emergency space mission

China carried out its first emergency space launch by sending the unmanned spacecraft “Shenzhou-22” to the space station. The urgent mission aimed to deliver food, medicine, and repair equipment to fix a cracked porthole on the “Shenzhou-20” spacecraft, which was damaged after a collision with space debris.

4. New White Paper on arms control

On 27 November, China released a White Paper titled “Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation in China in the New Era.” The document outlines the country’s policies and practices in this field. Compared with previous versions, the new White Paper introduces new concepts and areas, including outer space, cyberspace, and AI, reflecting China’s contribution to global security governance.

5. Volkswagen’s investment in EVs

German automaker Volkswagen is trying to catch up in the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) market. The company completed the expansion of its R&D center in Hefei, making it the first and largest integrated research base of Volkswagen outside Germany. This center will reduce development time by 30% and support the “In China, for China” strategy.
