The European Commission has announced that, beginning on October 12, 2025, the Entry/Exit System (EES) will come into effect to accelerate border control procedures and enhance security within the Schengen Area.

The system will be implemented in stages across the borders of 29 participating countries and is expected to become fully operational at all checkpoints by April 10, 2026. The EES will record digital entry and exit data for non-EU citizens undertaking short-term stays.

The collected data will include fingerprints, biometric photos, and other travel-related information. Biometric templates will be stored in the Shared Biometric Matching System (sBMS), which will enable data verification and integration with the Visa Information System (VIS).

Digital records will remain valid for three years. During this period, repeat entries will only require an update of the traveler’s photo or fingerprint. Children under the age of 12 will not be required to provide fingerprints. For travelers holding short-term visas whose data is already available in the VIS, re-registration will not be necessary.

The European Commission stated that access to the data will be restricted to authorized national authorities and protected from misuse. The system is designed to enhance internal security and streamline automated border checks, making travel safer and more convenient.
