Turkmenistan is undertaking systematic work to improve the collection and utilization of data on children. Following the presentation of the results of the latest Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS7) across numerous indicators, the country has taken the next step in developing its system for collecting data on children and families. From May 5th to 9th, 2025, the State Committee of Turkmenistan on Statistics, in collaboration with UNICEF, successfully conducted training for specialists on MICS Plus data collection, which is planned to be carried out in May-June 2025.

As noted in a press release from the UNICEF Office in Turkmenistan, MICS Plus is a high-frequency household survey platform developed by UNICEF based on the traditional MICS format. Unlike standard MICS, MICS Plus surveys are conducted using mobile communication, allowing for rapid and cost-effective monitoring of trends across various topics, assisting governments in making informed decisions in a rapidly changing world.

Turkmenistan has become one of the first countries globally to initiate the implementation of the MICS Plus survey, thereby reaffirming its commitment to the application of digital technologies and the strengthening of national statistical systems for the regular acquisition of reliable and timely information on the situation of children and families. The five-day training was conducted by specialists from the Population Statistics Department of the State Committee of Turkmenistan on Statistics, with technical assistance from Tatyana Karaulats, a statistics and monitoring specialist from the Data and Analytics Section of UNICEF.

Training participants gained practical experience with the MICS Plus methodology, including the use of digital tools for conducting interviews and modules on education, household information, access to electricity in households, water supply and sanitation, and sources of livelihood. Particular attention was paid to panel survey techniques, such as call algorithms, which contribute to ensuring high data quality and response rates.

According to expert Tatyana Karaulats, MICS Plus is not just a technical tool but a reflection of a commitment to data-driven governance. It allows countries like Turkmenistan to monitor the situation of children and families in near real-time and adapt policies in accordance with current issues. And the State Committee of Turkmenistan on Statistics is demonstrating leadership by introducing this modern approach.

The State Committee on Statistics and UNICEF invite selected households to actively participate in the telephone survey. The survey is being conducted within the framework of the project "Strengthening national capacities for data collection and evidence generation in the field of child rights in Turkmenistan" co-funded by the European Union. By strengthening national capacity for the collection and use of reliable data, the project supports Turkmenistan's efforts to monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and promote child rights, according to the press release.
