A series of seminars across Turkmenistan help strengthen the role of the Ombudsman

A series of seminars on the role of the accredited national human rights institution in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals has concluded in Ashgabat as part of events dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025. The seminars were held in Dashoguz, Mary, Lebap and Balkan velayats, as well as in Ashgabat.
The seminars were organized as part of a joint project of the Ombudsman’s Office and UNDP in Turkmenistan “Strengthening the Institutional Capacity of the Ombudsman’s Office”. The events were attended by representatives of regional units of security agencies and law enforcement agencies, relevant ministries, municipalities, bar associations, youth and women’s organizations, as well as the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.

The program of the seminars included presentations on the legal and practical aspects of the interaction of the Ombudsperson’s Office with state and public structures, compliance with the UN Paris Principles regarding the status of accredited national human rights institutions, as well as the role of the Ombudsperson in the promotion and protection of human rights in Turkmenistan. Particular attention was paid to the ongoing cooperation between UNDP and the Ombudsperson’s Office. Key topics included the Ombudsperson’s Annual Report for 2024 and the results of the Ombudsperson’s Office accreditation in the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), with an emphasis on the implementation of the GANHRI recommendations for the period 2024-2027.

The seminars provided an important platform for deepening the participants’ understanding of human rights and the principles governing their protection, as well as the evolving role of the country’s Ombudsperson’s Office since its establishment.
