The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution proposed by the Russian Federation on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, thereby requesting the holding of a solemn meeting of the General Assembly in memory of the victims of that conflict, reports a RIA Novosti correspondent.

The document was adopted by consensus. The resolution was prepared by the Russian Federation in co-authorship with dozens of states, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, North Korea, and Iran. The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, in an interview with RIA Novosti, earlier called on UN member states to support the document and "thus pay tribute to all those who laid down their lives on the altar of the struggle for a world without Nazism".

The adopted UN General Assembly resolution, among other things, requests the chairman of the governing body of the World Organization to hold a "special solemn meeting of the General Assembly in memory of all victims of World War II during the second week of May in 2025, and subsequently to hold such meetings every five years".

The document also proposes that all UN members, non-governmental organizations, and individuals "appropriately" commemorate May 8-9 as a tribute to all victims of World War II.

In the preamble to the document, the General Assembly, in particular, called on members of the World Organization to do "everything possible" to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force. UN General Assembly resolutions are recommendatory in nature.
