How Ashgabat street appeared in Nizhny Novgorod
Ashgabat Street is located in the central part of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. It runs along the old "Krasny Prosveshchenets" quarter, where houses were built back in the 1920s.
Why is Ashgabat Street called that
The territory behind the Petropavlovsk cemetery (now the Kulibin Park) began to be developed at the end of the 19th century. The small streets in the new quarter had rather technical names. Thus, Ashgabat Street was designated as the 14th and 15th lines. With the advent of the new government, the street became Artillery. But it did not exist under this name for long.
On September 21, 1949, the city council executive committee decided to approve the name of Ashgabat Street instead of the previous name. At the time of the renaming, Artillery Street belonged to the Zhdanovsky district of the city of Gorkiy.
The street was named after the capital of Turkmenistan - Ashgabat. Thus, the city of Gorkiy honored the memory of those who died in the 1948 earthquake.
As you know, the terrible tragedy in Ashgabat happened on the night of October 6, when most people were asleep. The earthquake of magnitude 9-10 almost completely destroyed the city and its surroundings.
In Moscow, they learned about what happened in the morning. Huge forces and resources were thrown to help the victims. The evacuation of the seriously wounded and children began. Two days later, rail service was restored.
