The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Office in Geneva organized a hybrid-format meeting dedicated to Turkmenistan's chairmanship in the Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

The event was attended by the leadership of the UN regional commissions coordinating the SPECA Programme — the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), as well as the accredited permanent representatives of SPECA member states in Geneva, heads and representatives of national coordinating bodies.

During the meeting, held on January 29, the Turkmen delegation presented detailed information about the concept of its chairmanship, as well as the related events planned for the current year.

In open discussions, the participants exchanged views on joint activities for the near future, particularly regarding the implementation of previously reached agreements.

The United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) was established on March 26, 1998, by the Tashkent Declaration. The document was signed by the Presidents of Central Asian countries and the Executive Secretaries of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The Programme’s goal is to promote the economic development, cooperation, and integration of the participating countries into the economies of Europe and Asia. Currently, the SPECA member states are Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. ECE and ESCAP jointly provide comprehensive support for activities within the Programme, closely collaborating with the UN Resident Coordinators in the SPECA countries.
