The Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway will be extended to the port of Chabahar
Iran has started laying the Mashhad-Zahedan railway line, which will be the continuation of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran steel trunk line, Tass reports. The new route will run from the north-east of the country to the southeast to the port of Chabahar on the coast of the Gulf of Oman, thus opening the states of Central Asia through the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. The Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran transport corridor was put into operation in December 2014, its launch allowed to significantly shorten the route to Mashhad and several times to increase the volume of cargo traffic in this direction. The implementation of these projects increases the transit potential of Turkmenistan, which has a strategically important geographical location in the region.
