Michel Barnier appointed as France's Prime Minister

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed 73-year-old Michel Barnier, a veteran of the Republican party, as the country's new Prime Minister. According to Euronews, Barnier, known as the former chief Brexit negotiator, has been tasked with forming a unity government.

Barnier's appointment comes amid a political crisis following parliamentary elections held on June 30 and July 7. No party won an absolute majority in parliament, casting doubt on the new cabinet's ability to secure support from MPs.

Barnier has already proven his diplomatic skills during the negotiations over Britain's exit from the European Union. Now he will have to demonstrate those skills again as he tries to unite the disparate political forces in France.
