Google Maps invites users to explore Paris landmarks during the Olympics
Google Maps has been updated. The latest update to the suite of apps invites users to explore historical versions of the French capital's famous landmarks during the Summer Olympics. This was reported on the official blog of Google.
This immersive experience is made possible thanks to augmented reality (AR) technologies. The development was implemented in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture and the game studio Ubisoft.
So, some famous landmarks on Google Maps, including the Eiffel Tower, now have an augmented reality button. By clicking on it, users can explore an object in time by pointing their phone at it. In the case of the Eiffel Tower, the main symbol of Paris and all of France, you can see the original architectural concepts of the structure, which were ultimately not realized.
By pointing the phone at the banks of the Seine, users will be able to see temporary structures erected for the Exposition Universelle in 1900.
Similar features are available at other Parisian landmarks, such as Notre Dame Cathedral. Users will also be able to see views of the Bastille Saint-Antoine and the Tuileries Palace before demolition.
