The International Association of Public Transport has joined the Turkmen initiative


The International Union of Public Transport/UITP has joined the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport, created on the initiative of Turkmenistan.
The Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport (GFST) was established on July 6, 2022 by the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations and serves as an informal platform for maintaining a broad multilateral dialogue on promoting safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all in support of sustainable economic growth, improving social well-being of people and expanding international cooperation and trade.
The first ministerial meeting of the Group was convened at UN Headquarters in New York on April 16, 2024. Participation in the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport is aimed at consolidating efforts within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035), as reported on the page of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN.
Today, the Group unites 18 countries: Azerbaijan, Angola, Armenia, Belarus, Djibouti, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, China, Laos, Morocco, Nicaragua, Russian Federation, El Salvador, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Philippines.
The Office of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, has also joined the Group.
UITP (Union Internationale des Transports Publics) is a strong advocate for sustainable urban mobility. With a history of over 135 years, it is the only global network that brings together all public transport players and all sustainable modes of transport.
