Global smartphone shipments grew 6% in the second quarter of 2024
Global smartphone shipments rose to 285.4 million units in the second quarter of 2024, or 6.5% year-on-year, according to a preliminary report from global research firm IDC. This is the fourth consecutive quarter of sales growth.
The market leader at the end of the quarter was the South Korean company Samsung, which increased shipments by 0.7% compared to the last year, to 53.9 million smartphones.
The second place in terms of shipments in the second quarter among global smartphone manufacturers is occupied by the American corporation Apple. It sold 45.2 million iPhones. Last year, this figure was 44.5 million. Despite this, the tech giant’s market share decreased from 16.6% to 15.8%.
Experts believe that the reason for the fall in the market share of the two world leaders is the success of the Chinese corporation Xiaomi, which sold 42.3 million smartphones in the second quarter, increasing shipments by 27.4% compared to the last year. This resulted in Xiaomi's market share being just 1% less than Apple's 14.8% global market share. A year ago, the gap between the two companies was 4.2%.
“While Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the market and benefit most from the ongoing premiumization trend, many leading Chinese OEMs are increasing shipments of low-end models in an attempt to gain market share amid weak demand,” research director at IDC Nabila Popal said in the report.
