The UAE will host the first ever autonomous car race
On April 27, the first-ever Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) autonomous car race will take place at the five-kilometer modern Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi (UAE).
The difference between A2RL and the famous traditional Formula 1 is that the functions of the pilot in the cars are performed by a computer/central control unit with specially written code for artificial intelligence.
The races will be run in Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars, which share the same suite of autonomous technologies. This equalizes the chances of all participants to win.
The cars are equipped with Honda and Toyota turbocharged engines. This allows them to accelerate to a speed of 300 km/h. In total, autonomous cars will have to go through 16 laps, each of which has 16 difficult turns.
Monitoring of the situation on the highway will be carried out by a complex of scanners, radars, lidar (a technology for measuring distances by emitting light), ultrasonic sensors and gyroscopes.
The main feature of racing is the need for the AI algorithm to master complex maneuvers together with programmers directly on the track.
The competition will be held with the participation of teams from the USA, Germany, China, UAE, Hungary, Italy, Singapore and Switzerland.
The race prize fund is $2.25 million.
